School assembly presentations on Alaska dog mushing

Since 1984 Lorraine has lived the colorful life of a dog musher and boat captain in Homer, Alaska, where she owned and operated a dog sled tour business, a bed and breakfast and worked in many out of the ordinary occupations. “California Cheerleader Turns Dog Musher" wrote Alaska People Magazine in a profile of the Walnut Creek , CA. native. Lorraine holds a BA in Environmental Studies & emphasis in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. As many Alaskans discover, to make a living requires multiple talents and Lorraine is a prime example of this! As a 100 ton licensed captain she has operated research vessels, tour boats and commercial fishing boats as well as private yachts in the Bahamas. For two years she ran landing crafts on the '89 Exxon Valdez oil spill clean-up then went to work for National Marine Fisheries. Other endeavors include commercial fishing, a fish buying business, producing a coupon book, giving dog sled cart rides on the beach, service industry jobs, mending fishing nets, driving taxi cab and most currently, doing entertaining shows during her summers at the Kenai Princess Lodge in Cooper Landing, AK and touring guests around this charming small town nestled in the glacier carved mountains along the Kenai River!

In addition to mushing her own dog team, Lorraine trained dogs for the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race and worked with Warner Brothers and Steven Seagal on the film "On Deadly Ground." Her most prized business started from humble beginnings that grew and grew to become one of Alaska's premier tours; it involved taking guests by helicopter high in the mountains to experience running a dog team across a glacier! It has since changed ownership and Lorraine moved on to new adventures… the summer of 2004 she spent 3 months on a research vessel in Prince William Sound amongst the whales, eagles and otters…watching thousands of salmon spawn under the watchful eyes of roaming bears, making for the best summer ever and now at one of Alaska’s most beautiful wilderness lodges owned by Princess Cruises!

As a motivational speaker, using her dog mushing presentations to share adventures and examples of overcoming adversities remains a favorite occupation and definitely one of the most satisfying. Never married, her "family" includes her Alaskan huskies, horses, birds, a cat, a large fish aquarium, numerous houseplants and two pink plastic flamingos, her "tropical connection" for those cold nights on the trail.
